How to Tell if a Gemstone Is Real

Simple at-home tests (breath, light, scratch, water) can give clues about whether a gemstone is genuine — but professional lab testing is the only way to be sure.

Before you test anything, it helps to know what “real” even means. In the gem world there are four different things people can mean:

  • Natural — formed in the earth with no human intervention.
  • Synthetic (lab-grown) — the same chemical and physical makeup as the natural stone, but grown in a lab. Real material, not a fake.
  • Imitation — a different, cheaper material (usually glass or plastic) made to look like the gem. This is what most people mean by “fake.”
  • Treated — a natural stone that has been heated, irradiated, or filled to improve its color or clarity.

Home tests are best at catching obvious imitations like glass. They generally cannot tell natural from synthetic, or detect treatments — that takes lab equipment. Keep that in mind as you work through the tests below.

The breath (fog) test

Breathe on the stone as you would to fog a mirror. Gems with high thermal conductivity — diamond in particular — disperse the fog almost instantly, while glass and many imitations stay foggy for a couple of seconds. It is a quick, non-damaging first filter, but it is crude: several genuine stones also hold fog briefly, so treat a slow-clearing result as a reason to look closer, not a verdict.

The light and inclusion test

Hold the stone up to a light and examine it with a loupe or your phone's macro camera. Most natural gems contain small inclusions — tiny mineral crystals, fine needles, or feather-like fractures — because they grew slowly underground. Glass imitations, by contrast, are often too perfect, or reveal tell-tale round gas bubbles and swirl marks. Counterintuitively, visible internal imperfections are usually a good sign the stone is real; flawless clarity under magnification is suspicious.

The scratch (hardness) test

Hardness is one of a gemstone's most reliable properties, measured on the Mohs scale. Since ordinary glass is about 5.5, a harder gem will scratch glass while glass cannot scratch it. A real diamond (Mohs 10), sapphire or ruby (9), or quartz (7) will mark a glass surface. But apply this carefully.

Caution: the scratch test can permanently damage a softer stone or its polished surface, and a “can't scratch glass” result does not mean fake — many genuine gems (opal, turquoise, fluorite, apatite) are simply softer than glass. Never scratch-test a mounted, antique, or potentially valuable stone. When in doubt, skip it.

The water and float test

This one is specific to a few organic materials rather than mineral gems. Genuine amber is very light and will float in a strong saltwater solution (about two tablespoons of salt per cup of water), while most plastic and glass imitations sink. Real amber is also warm to the touch and lightweight for its size. The float test says nothing about harder crystalline gems like sapphire or emerald, so use it only for suspected amber or jet.

The heat and UV test

Some stones respond to heat or ultraviolet light in characteristic ways. Many diamonds, rubies, and other gems fluoresce — glowing under a UV lamp — though the absence of glow proves nothing. Genuine amber releases a soft piney, resinous smell when a heated needle touches an inconspicuous spot, whereas plastic smells acrid and chemical. These are supporting clues, and the heat test is destructive, so use it sparingly and only on hidden areas.

None of these tests confirm authenticity or value. They can flag an obvious imitation, but they cannot separate natural from synthetic, detect treatments, or grade quality. For anything you believe is a real diamond, ruby, sapphire, or emerald, a laboratory certificate — from the GIA, AGS, or another recognized lab — is the only genuine proof.
